Satechi Launches Aluminium Type C Pro Hub For Mac

Passthrough power was initially rare for USB-C docks, which were designed to extend the single port on a 2015 and 2016 MacBook. This was unfortunate, because a dock should be a way to get more out of a laptop without watching the battery drain. The ($60 on ) is part of a wave of docks that started to appear in mid-2016 that are both affordably priced and can make use of an Apple or a third-party USB-C charger while offering extensibility. The Satechi is a neat combination of aesthetics and function. The rounded corners are nice for a unit you’ll drop into a bag, and the aluminum finish (available in four colors) can match or complement your Mac. Utility matters, too.

The built-in cable has reinforcement at the dock connection and the head. The USB-C jack is in an aluminum case for durability and stability, and it fits snugly into a MacBook. The cable itself has a heavy duty flexible coating. All of that should combine to make it stand up well to wear and tear. Satechi The dock has an HDMI port that supports 4K video at up to 30Hz using the DisplayPort standard.

This is an odd aspect of USB-C, as support for the standard is built into the Mac and carried across the USB-C bus through dedicated channels, so the dock just has to get out of the way and route the signal appropriately. This one does so. (The port can support lower-resolution displays, too.) I tested a newly-erased external USB 3.0 solid-state drive with the dock’s USB 3 Type-A ports, and was able to get the maximum read (400 MBps) and write (300 MBps) speeds, even connected to the 4K display, which can reduce the number of data lanes available on the USB bus.

The only downside to the dock is minor and didn’t come up in testing. Each Type-A port can provide no more than 1 amp (A) of power, and combined, the dock shouldn’t exceed 2A. The HDMI output and USB-C power passthrough don’t count against this.

USB devices should “handshake” with a port on a computer, dock, or hub to figure out how much power a device can obtain from the port. But Satechi says that a higher-amperage USB device could try to pull more current than the dock can handle without shutting down. In testing, I didn’t see this even with a bus-powered SSD attached that formatted itself over several hours and an iPhone 6s charging via a Lightning cable. Some other docks I’ve tested seemed to shut down much more readily based on power pulls; that didn’t happen with the Satechi. Bottom line There’s a lot to like about the Satechi Slim Aluminum Type-C Multi-Port Adapter, including the price.

At $60, it’s $20 less than Apple’s less robust and less capable, which has an awkward dongle shape and one fewer USB 3 Type-A port. If you just want to be able to charge or attach two USB devices and have the option for up to a 4K display, the Satechi is an attractive pick.

When Apple launched the new 12-inch MacBook earlier this year, some of the first accessories for the laptop - which uses USB Type-C exclusively - were various adapters and dongles that allowed customers to expand the initially limiting capabilities of the hardware with access to traditional USB, HDMI, and SD card ports. Apple itself launched a line of expansion cables for USB Type-C devices, and now third-party accessory company Satechi has its own Type-C line of USB hubs and adapters for customers to choose from. Satechi's Type-C USB 3.0 3-in-1 Combo Hub Satechi sent me two of the company's new accessories focusing on the connectivity between USB-C devices and more traditional inputs, mainly USB 3.0. One of the accessories is a complex 'Hub' ($39.99, on sale for $34.99) with three USB 3.0 ports along with one SD and one microSD card slot, while the other is a simple dongle ($14.99) with a USB-C connector and a traditional USB-A 3.0 port.

Each product comes in three different colors to match the shades of the new line of Retina MacBooks: Gunmetal (Space Gray), Gold, and Silver. Because neither dongle offers an additional USB-C port, there's no passthrough charging feature. Satechi's Type-C USB Adapter Overall, Satechi successfully mirrors Apple's visual aesthetic with the two accessories, and although I was sent Gold accessories that didn't exactly mesh well with my Space Gray MacBook, it seems when color-matched the new USB hubs would blend right in with their respective MacBooks. With the release of the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple now supports Qi-based wireless inductive charging on its latest phones, and that means charging pads have quickly become popular accessories for iPhone owners.Apple's favored partners for wireless charging pads are Belkin and mophie, and Apple is carrying a $60 charger from each company in its own online and retail stores.

But there are lots of other options available on the market, and we've had a chance to try out a number of them, so we're rounding them up in this guide which we'll continue to update going forward. Satechi today introduced a new USB-C hub with one HDMI output, one USB-C port with Power Delivery, one USB-A port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.Satechi's new USB-C hub for iPad Pro Designed for the new iPad Pro with a USB-C port, the Aluminum Type-C Mobile Pro Hub allows the tablet to be connected to a wide variety of peripherals, such as a 4K display via HDMI or a wired keyboard via USB. The headphone jack is also valuable since the new iPad Pro lacks one for wired headphones.Satechi's new hub can be pre-ordered now for $45 in Silver or Space Gray. The price will rise to $60 when it begins shipping around mid-December.Satechi's new USB-C hub for iPad Pro By comparison, the recently announced HyperDrive USB-C hub for the new iPad Pro will be available in December for $49 at launch and $100 regularly. It features six ports: a 4K HDMI output, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an SD card slot, a microSD card slot, one USB-A port, and one USB-C port with Power Delivery. All in all, if you need SD and microSD card readers for importing photos to the new iPad Pro, then consider the HyperDrive hub.

Otherwise, the Satechi hub is a good option for $40 less at regular price.Note: MacRumors is an affiliate partner with Satechi. When you click a link and make a purchase, we may receive a small payment, which helps us keep the site running.
