It was becoming a huge challenge to do the simplest things due to the endless spinning of the beach ball of death. My plan was to replace the 4GB with 16GB of RAM and upgrade the 500GB hard drive with 750GB SSD.
I started with the RAM and the performance was greatly improved. Once I added the SSD, it was even better.
I did both upgrades myself after watching some YouTube videos and reading a couple of articles. Upgrading to El Capitan added yet another level of improved performance. I finally bit the bullet and figured more RAM would fix the problem. I installed 2 8 gig RAM chips. The performance increased dramatically and I did not need to clean install the OS as I feared I might.
The only draw back was in during the installation you need to be careful as you snap the units in. 1st try I did not seed them correctly and they did not register. The second time I got them to fit properly, but a piece of the bracket in the computer snapped when I installed it. I'm not a klutz at this type of stuff, so be a bit careful.
Everything stayed in place despite the missing plastic, so the computer works fine. This is the second RAM upgrade I've purchased from Crucial for my MacBook Pro. They've proven to be reliable and competitive in price with other comparable products on the market. The modules are easy to install, especially if you've had experience in this area.
However, if you're a 'newbie', you'll have to search the Apple customer support web site or Google it, to get installation instructions because they are not included in with the product. Either way, the installation is straight forward and easy.

This really makes a difference if you use heavy memory applications like vmware fusion or have a lot of apps open at once. I wouldn't recommend it to a regular user - I think you would get more bang for your buck by going to SSD, however if you do run a lot of apps this is a great addition once you have upgraded the Hard drive to an SSD. I wouldn't add the RAM for your first step as it really doesn't make a difference in perceived speed until you really start using a lot of RAM. It did dramatically increase performance when I installed VMWARE fusion though and I could see this being a great addition for video editing, etc. Great warranty which is why I purchased form a reputable memory company.
