Algebra Jeopardy
This lesson is really set up for any day that you need something interesting and engaging for your students that has good mathematical content, but can stand alone, separate from any specific unit. New official silhouette cameo 3 firmware 1.20.0 for mac. This is a Jeopardy-style game that works well with small groups or large - I've used it with six students and also with a class of 32 (we had four teams of five and rotated players after every five questions). You will need to be able to project the PowerPoint for class viewing, but it works well just using a computer and LCD projector or TV.
Before class I arrange the desks into however many teams I want to have for the day, but you could have your students do this at the beginning of class instead. If you have access to quizbowl buzzers or some other electronic student response system I recommend using that system to reduce arguments about which student raised their hand first! Once everything is set up, I randomly assign teams and review the basic rules then begin play.
Math Jeopardy by Robert Vallin Slippery Rock University The Urban Room at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh was standing room only as MathFest was kicked off with the now traditional game of Math Jeopardy. Organized by Robert Vallin of the MAA & Slippery Rock University and Michael Berry of the University of Tennessee (who emceed the event) the popular game show, now presented with a mathematical bent, contained categories such as '2001, a Calculus Odyssey', 'World Cup', and ' 'Trans-' formers'. This year's competitors were four-person teams from Augsburg College, the SMALL program at Williams College, Hope College, and the Lafayette College REU.
These teams worked on questions such as 'The cosine of the angle between the linearly independent vectors (3, 1) and (-2, 4)' from the category 'Declaration of Linear Independence'. Lafayette shot out to a quick lead and held off the competition in the end, which was decided by the Final Jeopardy question 'The one day of the year when both the number of the month and day of the month are both perfect numbers.' Prizes awarded were MAA merchandise including flying discs, playing cards, yo-yo's, and stress relief icosahedra. Next year, in Lexington, Kentucky we will play Math Jeopardy again to start things off on a fun note.
